Why-Does-My-Shoulder-Hurt-When-I-Lift-My-Arm-1200x675.png

Elite Physical Therapy | Why Does My Shoulder Hurt When I Lift My Arm?

You reach into a cabinet. Put on a shirt. Lift a grocery bag. Reach behind you in the car.

And your shoulder hurts.

The first instinct is often: “I shouldn’t do that movement.”

But sometimes the better question is:

“Why is this movement difficult right now—and how can we help my shoulder do it better?”

Shoulder pain physical therapy assessment

Start With the Basics

Shoulder pain can involve the rotator cuff, tendons, joints, muscles, or surrounding tissues. Sometimes symptoms felt in the shoulder can even be influenced by the neck.

But a diagnosis or MRI finding doesn’t tell us everything about how you move.

At Elite Physical Therapy, we want to see your shoulder in action.

Can you lift your arm?

Where does it become uncomfortable?

What happens if we change the angle?

Does your shoulder blade move well?

What happens when we add a little resistance?

Can you push, pull, carry, or reach?

And most importantly:

What are you trying to get back to doing?

Don’t Be Afraid to Move

Pain doesn’t automatically mean that every painful movement is damaging your shoulder.

And avoiding a movement forever usually isn’t the answer either.

Instead, we find what your shoulder can tolerate today.

Maybe lifting all the way overhead hurts, but lifting halfway feels fine.

Good. That’s somewhere we can start.

We work near the edge of what you can comfortably do, occasionally challenging that edge, and then gradually expand it.

Move. Assess. Adjust. Progress.

Your shoulder learns by doing.

Build the Foundation First

Sometimes the answer isn’t a complicated exercise.

We may need to go back to basics:

Mobility → control → strength → functional movement.

Can you move the shoulder comfortably?

Can you control your shoulder blade and arm?

Can you tolerate resistance?

Can you push and pull?

Can you carry?

Can you reach overhead?

Once the foundation is there, exercises should become progressively more like real life.

Your Shoulder Doesn’t Work by Itself

Reaching overhead isn’t just a shoulder exercise.

Your shoulder blade moves. Your upper back moves. Your trunk provides support. Your arm has to produce and control force.

That’s why simply strengthening one small shoulder muscle may not be enough.

We look at the whole movement, determine where the problem is occurring, and then work on the pieces that matter for you.

Then We Make It Functional

This is where rehabilitation should become personal.

Someone who wants to reach into a kitchen cabinet needs something different from someone who wants to garden, swim, play tennis, lift weights, or return to an overhead job.

Your rehabilitation might progress from:

basic movement → resistance → pushing and pulling → carrying → reaching → overhead work → your actual activity.

We don’t want you doing the same three exercises forever.

As your body adapts, the exercise should progress too.

What If an Exercise Hurts?

We don’t automatically stop every movement that causes discomfort.

We also don’t believe in forcing your way through significant pain.

Instead, we ask:

What happens if we change it?

Change the range.

Change the position.

Change the resistance.

Change the speed.

Change the number of repetitions.

Sometimes a small change makes a difficult movement surprisingly comfortable.

That information helps us understand your shoulder—and gives us somewhere to begin.

We Do Things Differently at Elite

At Elite Physical Therapy, treatment isn’t based on handing everyone with shoulder pain the same exercise sheet.

We listen to your story.

We assess how you move.

We go back to the basics when necessary.

We identify what you can already do well.

Then we progressively challenge your shoulder until it can handle what your life requires.

The goal isn’t simply to have less pain on the treatment table.

The goal is to build a shoulder you can trust when you use it.

When Should You Have Shoulder Pain Evaluated?

If shoulder pain keeps returning, limits your movement, interferes with sleep, or prevents you from working, exercising, or doing normal daily activities, a physical therapy evaluation can help identify what is limiting you and where rehabilitation should begin.

Seek prompt medical care following significant trauma or for symptoms such as obvious deformity, substantial swelling, sudden significant weakness, or inability to move the arm.

Let’s Find Your Starting Point

Your shoulder may not need more protection.

It may need the right movement, at the right level, progressed at the right time.

At Elite Physical Therapy, that’s where we start.

Elite Physical Therapy | Pregnancy & Prenatal Physical Therapy

Pregnancy is one of the most incredible transformations the human body can experience. In just a few months, your body adapts to support the growth and development of an entirely new human being.

To make this possible, nearly every system in the body changes. Hormones increase ligament flexibility, posture shifts, breathing mechanics adapt, and your center of gravity moves forward as your baby grows. Blood volume increases significantly, your heart works harder, and muscles are asked to support new loads and movement patterns.

Prenatal physical therapy for pregnancy discomfort

Given all of these changes, it’s no surprise that many women experience discomfort during pregnancy.

Recently, I worked with a pregnant patient who was experiencing significant rib and upper body pain. Her symptoms were affecting her ability to sleep comfortably, move freely, and even take deep breaths. Like many women, she assumed that pain was simply part of being pregnant.

While some discomfort is common, persistent pain should not be ignored.

Physical Therapy During Pregnancy

Physical therapy during pregnancy is about much more than stretching or temporary pain relief. A comprehensive prenatal physical therapy program focuses on helping your body adapt to the physical demands of pregnancy while preparing for labor, delivery, and postpartum recovery.

Depending on your individual needs, treatment may include:

  • Improving core and pelvic stability
  • Building strength in the hips, legs, and upper body
  • Optimizing breathing mechanics
  • Addressing rib, back, pelvic, or hip pain
  • Improving posture and body awareness
  • Teaching movement strategies for daily activities
  • Preparing the pelvic floor for labor and recovery
  • Educating patients about postpartum healing and return to activity

The goal is not simply to reduce pain today. The goal is to help you move through pregnancy feeling stronger, more confident, and better prepared for the changes ahead.

You Don’t Have to “Push Through” Pain

Pregnancy is a natural process, but natural does not always mean comfortable. Many aches and pains can be improved with the right guidance, exercise, and support.

If you are experiencing rib pain, back pain, pelvic pain, hip pain, or other pregnancy-related discomforts, know that you do not have to simply “push through” them.

Pain may be common during pregnancy—but living with it isn’t always necessary.

How-to-Choose-the-Right-Physical-Therapist-in-Hinsdale-IL-1200x675.png

Elite Physical Therapy | How to Choose the Right Physical Therapist

Choosing a physical therapist is an important step in your recovery. Whether you’re dealing with back pain, recovering after surgery, managing pelvic floor concerns, or returning to sports, finding someone you feel comfortable with can make a big difference in your experience.

Every physical therapist brings different strengths, training, and treatment styles. The key is finding someone whose approach matches your goals and needs.

Choosing the right physical therapist in Hinsdale IL

Look for Experience That Matches Your Needs

Physical therapists often develop special interests and pursue additional training in different areas of care. Some focus on pelvic floor rehabilitation, others on sports injuries, balance and dizziness, spine care, or orthopedic conditions.

If you have a specific concern, it’s worth asking whether the therapist has experience treating patients with similar conditions. Their background and continuing education can give you confidence that you’re receiving care tailored to your needs.

Find a Treatment Style That Feels Right for You

Every clinic has its own way of delivering care, and there isn’t one approach that’s right for everyone.

Some people appreciate spending more time with their therapist throughout each visit, while others are comfortable with different treatment models. What’s most important is that you feel heard, your concerns are addressed, and you understand your treatment plan.

A good therapeutic relationship is built on trust, communication, and working together toward your goals.

Ask About the Evaluation Process

A thoughtful evaluation is often the foundation of successful treatment.

Your physical therapist should take time to understand your symptoms, medical history, daily activities, and personal goals. Since many conditions can have more than one contributing factor, a thorough assessment helps guide a treatment plan that is specific to you.

Treatment may include hands-on therapy, exercises, movement education, posture and breathing strategies, and a home program that supports your progress between visits.

Read Reviews and Don’t Be Afraid to Ask Questions

Reading patient reviews can give you a sense of what others have experienced, but your own comfort with the therapist is equally important.

During your first visit, feel free to ask questions about your condition, what may be contributing to your symptoms, what treatment will involve, and what you can expect during your recovery. A physical therapist should help you feel informed and comfortable throughout the process.

Our Approach at Elite Physical Therapy

At Elite Physical Therapy, we believe that every person deserves to be listened to and treated as an individual—not just a diagnosis.

Your appointments are one-on-one with the same physical therapist, allowing us to get to know you, understand your goals, and create a treatment plan that’s tailored specifically to you. We take the time to perform a comprehensive assessment because we believe lasting improvement starts with understanding the root cause of the problem whenever possible.

Most importantly, we want you to feel comfortable asking questions, actively participating in your recovery, and leaving each visit with a better understanding of your body and your progress.

Whether you choose our clinic or another excellent physical therapy practice, we encourage you to find a therapist who makes you feel supported, heard, and confident in your care. The right fit can make all the difference in your recovery journey.

Understanding Sciatica

If you’ve ever experienced sciatica that sharp, radiating pain running from your lower back down into your leg you know how disruptive it can be. Everyday activities like sitting, standing, or even sleeping can become difficult. At Elite Physical Therapy, we use the McKenzie Method of Mechanical Diagnosis and Therapy (MDT) to help patients find effective relief from this persistent condition.

What Causes Sciatica?

Sciatica itself is not a diagnosis but a symptom caused by irritation or compression of the sciatic nerve. This large nerve travels from your lower spine through the buttocks and down each leg. Irritation can occur due to a herniated disc, spinal stenosis, or joint dysfunction all of which mechanically influence how your spine moves and functions.

How the McKenzie Method Works

The McKenzie Method is an evidence-based approach that uses repeated movements to assess and treat pain in the spine and limbs. Developed by physiotherapist Robin McKenzie, this method focuses on identifying the direction of movement that reduces or “centralizes” pain meaning the discomfort moves out of the leg and toward the low back. It also emphasizes teaching patients self-management strategies to control symptoms and prevent recurrence.

Why MDT Helps Relieve Sciatica

During an MDT evaluation, therapists observe how your symptoms change with specific repeated movements, such as bending backward or forward. If one movement direction reduces leg pain and brings it toward the spine, it indicates a positive response. Based on this, a personalized exercise plan is developed to restore mobility, decrease nerve irritation, and improve function. Many patients who respond to MDT can avoid injections or surgery because the method focuses on long-term self-care and prevention.

What to Expect at Elite Physical Therapy

At Elite PT, every session begins with a thorough movement-based assessment. You’ll be guided through targeted exercises to identify what brings relief. From there, we design a customized McKenzie program to reduce symptoms, maintain improvements, eliminate pain, and prevent future flare-ups. With the right guidance and home exercises, you gain control over your recovery and can return to the activities you love with confidence.
